GEORGE EDWIN MORROW: 1863 – 1944
George was born on 29th September 1863 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. His father, John George Morrow, was a Wesleyan Minister and George was the eldest of nine children born to John and his wife Harriet. By 1881 the Morrow family had moved back to Great Britain and were living in Market Street in the town of Rye, Sussex. George, then 17 years old was living with the family and was working as a solicitor’s clerk.
George must have decided that a career in the law was not for him as we find him ten years later working as a bank clerk. He was to work in banking for the rest of his working life. He had also left the family home and was boarding in Hythe where he was probably working.
The Electoral Roll of 1894 tells us George was then living at 2 Lansdowne Street in Hove. His accommodation consisted of a sitting room and bedroom for which he paid rent of 15s a week. That same year he married Bertha Evalina Goodman. Bertha gave birth to the couple’s only child, a son, George “Leslie” Morrow, in 1897.
George, Bertha and their young son moved around as George’s career in banking progressed. In 1901 George had become a bank cashier and the family were living in Aldrington, Sussex. In 1905 they were once again in Hove but in 1907 were in Worthing. In 1911 George, now a chief cashier, had moved with his family to Oxford and we know from that year’s census return that his employer was London County & Westminster Bank.
By 1914 George had been further promoted and was the manager of the London County & Westminster Bank in High Street, Hemel Hempstead. He, Bertha, and George lived at Brent Lodge in Doctors Commons Road in Berkhamsted where they employed a domestic servant.
In 1939 George, had retired. The couple were still living in Doctors Commons Road, but had moved from Brent Lodge to St Ruan and it was at that address that Bertha died in March 1942. George himself died two years later in March 1944 at the age of 79 years.
