Plot 81, James Musgrave Brown (1870-1899)

James was born in 1870 in Bingham, Notts to James, a licenced victualler and his wife Elizabeth (née Miles). He was baptised at St Mary’s Orston, Notts on 10 April.

In January 1892 his father was landlord of The Crown, Berkhamsted. In that month James gave evidence at the inquest of a gentleman who had shot himself while a resident at The Crown.

James married Annie Wassell at Brewood, Staffs on 11 October 1898.

He became a licenced victualler but died at Bourne End 16 March 1899 aged 29

His brother Arthur Louis  is buried in plot 816 and j his father is in an unmarked grave.

Plot 816 Arthur Louis Brown (1873-1906) 

Arthur was born in Hastings in 1873 and baptised on 14 April that year at the church of St Mary Magdalene.  He was the son of James and Elizabeth Brown. His father, born in Caithness, was butler at the imposing Bohemia House in the town. His mother was born in Penn Street, Buckinghamshire.

James took over the Crown Inn in Berkhamsted High Street by 1881 and Arthur lived there for the rest of his life. By 1901 he was working as the barman.

He died unmarried, aged only 32 in November 1906. In 1911 his father was laid to rest here with him
