FREDERICK BUCKLE; 1868 – 1940
Frederick was born on 27th March 1868. He was born in Hunston, Suffolk. His parents were John and Susan Buckle. John Buckle was an agricultural labourer. Frederick was the youngest of six children born to John and Susan. The oldest child was William, born about 1858, followed by Esther, 1861; Thomas, 1863; Hannah, 1864; Joseph, 1866 and finally Frederick.
In 1881 Frederick, although only 13 years old, was working as an agricultural labourer, like his father and older brother, Joseph. Frederick, however, did not remain working as a labourer for long. Ten years later Frederick had moved from Suffolk and was working as a groom at Cashio Bridge House near Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. Cashio Bridge House was then occupied by a tea importer, Edward Moon and his family.
Frederick married in 1894. His bride was Rose Ellen Freeman. Rose had been born in London, but in 1891 she too was working at Cashio Bridge House where she was a domestic servant. The wedding took place in St Pancras, and Rose and Frederick settled in London after their wedding. Rose gave birth in 1897 to her first child, a daughter Ellen Hannah Buckle, Ellen’s birth being registered in St Pancras. Rose and Frederick soon moved from London. In 1901 they were living at 8 Bridge Street in Berkhamsted and Frederick was working as a labourer.
Rose gave birth to two more children, both sons. Thomas Frederick Buckle was born in Berkhamsted in the second quarter of 1902 and John William Buckle in the second quarter of 1904.
Rose died on 13th June 1905 and was buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery on 16th June. She was 35 years old. Rose’s address at the time she died was 32 Cross Oak Road.
Frederick remained in Berkhamsted following Rose’s death and never remarried. In 1911 he and the three children were still living in Cross Oak Road and had been joined by his sister, Hannah, who was keeping house for Frederick and the children. Frederick and his sister were still together in 1939, Frederick then being 71 and working as a jobbing gardener. Frederick died in 1940. He, like Rose, was buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery, but not with Rose. His sister Hannah died in 1943 and Hannah was buried with Frederick
