George William Davis was born on the 5th May 1854, the second child of George and Sarah Davis (nee Preston) who lived at the Red Lion Yard, Berkhamsted. This was, at that time, an impoverished area of Berkhamsted, with overcrowded housing and many reported instances of disorder, drunkenness and disease.

George married Ann Maria London from Northchurch in 1874 and by 1881 had managed to move away from Red Lion Yard to 1 Thompson Row, Holiday Street, Berkhamsted.

George and Ann lived at this address until at least 1901, and during this time produced some 14 children (5 of whom had died before 1911). George’s main occupation was as a Brewers Labourer, and the children were engaged in various occupations from Bricklayer, Butcher and Baker to Brush-drawer and Forewoman in the mantle factory; the Davis’s were certainly fully integrated into Berkhamsted daily life.

By 1911 George was occupied as a ‘Carter at the gas factory’ and along with Ann and 5 of the children was living at 52 Charles St.

Ann died in 1938 aged 82 and in 1939 George is recorded as living at 54 Charles Street with his eldest daughter Edith. George died in 1947 aged 93, and at that time was survived by 3 daughters and 1 son.

My direct link with George and Ann is that they are my great, great Grandparents, through their 5th child, Frank Charles Davis (1885-1937) my great Grandfather, William Horace Davis (1914-1993) my Grandfather and Stephen Frank Davis (1946 – ) my Father. My Father has no recollection of George and Ann being mentioned by his father, although they ‘crossed over’ by some 30 years, or of this grave being visited by him, he was not aware of the Davis family plot. My Father does recall the three surviving daughters of George and Ann, who lived together at 52 Charles Street into the 1960/70’s who he knew as (great) Aunts Emm, Lil and Edi, (Emily, Lily and Edith). He was then living at 4 Middle road which was just around the corner. He also recalls that at one time aunt Emm lived in one of the Alms houses in the high street.

Plot 946 Ann Maria Davis (née London) (1855-1938)

Ann was born in 1855 in Northchurch and was baptised there 14 October that year. Her parents were William, a labourer, and Emma (née Johnson). She was the elder of their two daughters and had two older brothers. In 1861 the family were living in Northchurch High Street. By 1871 the family were in Gossoms End. The two older boys had left home, but there were four daughters and three sons still at home. Emma and her next sister were straw plaiters and their mother worked as a laundress.

Ann married George William Davis in early 1874 and by 1881 were living at 1 Thompson Row, Holiday Street, Berkhamsted. Eventually they were to have 14 children (5 of whom had died before 1911).

Ann died in 1938 aged 82. George survived her until 1947 when he died aged 93 and was buried with here her .

Their son Frank Charles (1884-1937) and daughter Harriet Maria (1878-1959) lie in this cemetery in unmarked graves. Son William George (1881-1934) is buried in plot 948.
