EMILY DOUGHTY

Emily Doughty, nee Grace, was born in 1877 and died, aged 58, in April 1935. She married Alfred Doughty in December 1904. Alfred died, aged 45, in June 1926 and the couple are both buried in the Rectory Lane Cemetery.

Emily was born and grew up in Tring. Her father, William Grace, was variously described over the years as a “labourer”, an “estate labourer” and a “sawyer”. She was the youngest child of William and Sarah and, prior to 1888, had an older sister and two older brothers. The banns of marriage for William and Sarah were recorded in 1881when Emily was aged 4 but it looks as though her parents were together some years before that date. By 1881 her older sister, Mary, was working as a silk winder and her mother as a straw plaiter. These were the prevalent cottage industries in the area at the time.

Emily’s mother died, aged 51, in 1886, when Emily was only 9. Her father probably remarried as, by 1891, his wife is named as Rachael Grace and Emily has a younger brother born in 1888. Emily is still in the household and working as a silk winder. The family remains in Tring but have moved from their previous home in Brook Street to Akeman Street.

In 1904, aged 17, Emily is married to Alfred Doughty. They married in Tring but have four children, Veronica, Dorothy, Lawrence and Kathleen, within the next six years. All four are born in Berkhamsted. In 1911 and 1921 they are living at 3 Highfield Road. Alfred works for Cooper’s Chemical Works as an “Engine Driver” and by 1921 Emily’s eldest daughter is working at the Mantle Factory in Berkhamsted.

In 1926 Alfred died. Emily survived him by 9 years. She seems to have stayed in Berkhamsted as her address when she died was 13 Holliday Street.

Plot 635 Alfred James Doughty (1881-1926)

Alfred was born in 1881 in Wood Norton, Norfolk. His parents were Thomas, an agricultural labourer and Martha (née Clitheroe). He was the youngest of their five children, and the fourth boy.

In 1901, aged 19, he was a “horseman on farm”.

It is possible, given his experience with horses, that he is the Alfred Doughty, job master, at 7, High Street, Hitchin in Kelly’s Directory of 1902. (A job master kept a livery stable and hired out horses.)

Alfred married Emily Grace in Tring 24 December 1904. However, if he had been a job master in 1902, he was a labourer at the time of the marriage.

Their children Veronica Grace (1905), Dorothy (1907), Lawrence (1908) and Kathleen (1910) were all born in Berkhamsted.

In the 1911 and 1921 censuses they were living at 3, Highfield Road and James was an engine driver at Cooper’s chemical works.

By the time Alfred died aged only 45 in West Herts Hospital on 23 June 1926.

Emily survived him until 1935 and lies here with him.
