Mary Payne was one of six children born to John Payne and his second wife, Sophia Bradley. She was born on 27 November 1863 in Wendover.
When she was 19 she married Joseph Fletcher, an agricultural labourer at St Mary the Virgin in Wendover. Together they had seven children – four of whom predeceased her (one dying at less than a year, and another aged 19 fighting in Belgium two days before Christmas 1917).
Mary died in October 1932 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, when she was 68 years old. She is buried with another of her sons, George James, who died 8 years before her.

James George Fletcher was born in Lane End Wendover Buckinghamshire in 1890.
Ten years later the family had moved to 30 Gossams End Northchurch Berkhamsted where they remained for the rest of their lives.
He was sometimes called George and sometimes James on the census. By 1911 he was described as a general labourer.
He died in 1924.
