Alfred William Goss was the seventh child of William Goss and Sarah Young born in Berkhamsted on 9thFebruary 1870. The family were living in Park Street. His father died 10 years later and the family had moved to St John’s Well Lane. His brother and sister had started the brush manufacturing business. Alfred was still with the family in 1901. The business had grown and they had moved to High Street with the business and Alfred was now also part of it. Later that year when he was 31 he married Eva Maud Flint of Berkhamsted and they lived in High Street. They had 3 children Harold, Norman and Violet. He married his second wifeAmelia Melmoth a school teacher from Surrey. She died in 1937 and Alfred moved to Cross Oak Road where he lived for another 10 years and had a live in housekeeper, Florence Whitman. The Goss factory closed in the 1930’s. Alfred died in 1947 and is buried with his first wife Eva in Rectory Lane.

Eva Maud Flint (later Goss) was born in Berkhamsted on14th August 1876 to George Alfred Flint and Annie Harding, although she was not baptised until 4th March 1885. She was their youngest child and had five siblings. Her father was a master bricklayer and they lived in Upper Kitsbury Avenue. Her mother came from Chatress, Cambridgeshire, and she was a dressmaker. Eva was also became a dressmaker.
She married Alfred William Goss in summer 1902 when she was 26 and had three children Harold Stanley, Norman Alfred and Violet Maud. She lived at home with her parents until she married Alfred Goss. After she was married she lived in High St Berkhamsted, she died just before Christmas 10thDecember 1915. She was only 39.
