Plot 1011 Agnes Green (née Course) (1868-1935)
Agnes was born in Royston on 14 June 1868 to James and Sarah (née Thurley) Course. The couple had lost a daughter of the same name at just one year in 1867.
The Course family lived in Back Street, Royston. James was a tailor employing three people, including his son Nathaniel and, perhaps, his daughter Elizabeth who was a dressmaker. There were two more daughters, both at school, then Agnes and, at the time of the 1871 census, baby William.
In September 1872 Agnes was admitted to the Royston British School (Girls and Infants) along with two year old William.
By the time of the 1881 census the family had two lodgers, one of whom was a pupil teacher. Ten years later Agnes, now 22, was still living at home but was employed as a “mother’s help, domestic”. Two school mistresses boarded with the family and this must have been how Agnes was to meet her future husband George Green, who was a teacher at the National School.
The Herts & Cambs Reporter for August 11 1893 reported:
“On Tuesday at the pretty little Church of Wheathampsted, the marriage took place of Miss Agnes Course, youngest daughter of Mr James Course of this town and Mr George R[iarch] Green of Berkhamsted, and recently a teacher in the Royston National Schools, both being well-known and respected in the town… The bride who was daintily attired in white cashmere and lace… was attended by her father and four bridesmaids: Misses Maggie, Hattie and Alice Green (sisters of the bridegroom) and Miss Bettie Dyer. Numerous presents were received, some of a handsome character…”
By 1901 George and Agnes had moved to a five-roomed house, 2, Chapel Street in Berkhamsted. He was an assistant teacher. They also had another male teacher lodging with them.
Their only child, Reginald Ernest George was born in 1913 at Chapel Street.
The 1921 census records that they were still at 2, Chapel Street and that George was employed by HCC at the Victoria Church of England boys’ school.
Agnes died 4 August 1935 aged 70. George survived her until 1943 and is buried here with her.
