Unmarked grave John Andrews (1829-1904)
John was born in 1829 in Berkhamsted.
He married Catherine Wibden in Berkhamsted in 1853. David was born in 1857 followed by Sarah Jane 1859 and Ellen 1862. It appears likely that Catherine died at around this time.
David and Sarah were baptised together on 15 February 1863 in St Peter’s, Berkhamsted.
Perhaps this is connected to John’s marriage to Jane Osborn in Berkhamsted third quarter 1863 – she may have begun taking responsibility for her step-children and insisted on them being baptised.
They moved to Potten End where George was born in 1866 followed by Harry in 1868 and Rose in 1871.
The 1871 census records John as a hay and straw dealer in Potten End. His wife Jane and daughters Sarah and Ellen were straw plaiters, George worked for a farrier.
By 1881 the family has moved to Berkhamsted and John was licensee of The Bull beer house in the High Street. Fifteen year old George was a general labourer. The family also had a lodger.
Daisy was born in 1881 and Thomas in 1885.
Jane died in July 1889 and is buried in this cemetery.
In 1891 John was still the publican of The Bull and Harry, Daisy and Thomas were living at home.
“Robert Baker, Wigginton, was charged by P.C. Perry with being drunk while in charge of a horse and cart at Berkhampstead, and John Andrews, landlord of the Bull Inn, with permitting drunkenness in his house at the same time. George Baker, Robert Baker, and Edwin Baker were also charged with obstructing the highway. After considerable evidence had been adduced, the case against Robert Baker and John Andrews was dismissed, and a fine of 10s. for the obstruction was inflicted. The defence was that the men stopped with their hay carts on their way to London, because it rained fast, all day.” (Bucks Herald, Nov 1891).
John died in September 1904 at Provident Place, Berkhamsted, aged 75.
His son George is also buried in this cemetery.
