Plot 166 Frederick Miller (1825-1894)

Frederick was born 28 March 1825 in Berkhamsted, the first child of Frederick and Hannah Miller. He was baptised 11 September that year.

His father was an upholsterer born in Surrey and his mother was from Oxfordshire. In 1851 the family lived in the High Street and Frederick was an assistant to his father in the upholstery business.

In early 1852 he married Mary Ann Charlotte Skinner in Berkhamsted.

Kate Elizabeth was born in 1856 in Portsmouth and Eliza Jane in Berkhamsted in 1857. Sadly little Eliza died in September 1863, aged 6, and is buried here.

On census night 1861 Frederick and Mary Ann were visiting her brother Francis, a bricklayer, and his family, in Hackney. Frederick is described as “Upholster. Not in business.”

The 1871 census records Frederick, Kate and a 14 year old domestic servant living in Clarence Road, Hackney. His occupation is given as “None”. Mary Ann was visiting her sister Sarah and brother-in-law Charles Crook, a farmer, in Berkhamsted.

In 1881 Frederick, Mary Ann, Kate and his niece Charlotte Miller were living at 272, Dalston Lane, Hackney. Frederick was described as a “Fundholder” with no occupation – in other words, he was living off investments. The house still stands – a very pleasant semi-detached Victorian villa with two main floors, a semi-basement and an attic.

Frederick and Mary Ann eventually returned to a house named Gordon Cottage in Berkhamsted High Street and in 1891 were living there with Kate and Charlotte.

Frederick died 16 March 1894 High Street aged 68. His probate record describes him as “retired builder” although that occupation is not shown on any census records. Possibly he invested in building projects.

Eliza was born in 1857 in Berkhamsted to Frederick and Mary Ann Miller. Sadly she

died in September 1863 aged only 6 and is buried here with her parents.

Plot 166 Mary Ann Charlotte Miller (1826-1907)

Mary Ann was born 16 June 1826 in Berkhamsted to Charlotte (née Rolfe) and John Skinner, a master bricklayer and employer of 14 men.

She was christened at the age of fourteen on 23 May 1841 at St Peter’s.

In 1851 she was living with her parents, three of her brothers and her sister in the High Street.

She married Frederick Miller, an upholsterer, in Berkhamsted the next year.
