Kate Hornewas an older sister of Ada Sneath (nee Horne). Kate was born in 1871 in Mill Street, Berkhamsted, by andthe turn of the century the family moved to Station Road, Berkhamsted. Kate was a dressmaker and she never married. By the 1939 census she was still living in the same house with her younger sister, Mathilda and Ada’s daughter Rita. She died in 1944 and is buried in Rectory Lane.

Ada Jane Horne, was born in Potten End to John William Horne and Joanna Ginger. The Hornes lived in Little Gaddesden and Potten End, John William’s father and grandfather were originally from Shropshire in Hardwick Hall where they worked as grooms before coming to Hertfordshire as land managers. Ada was from a very large family having 9 brothers and sisters some of whom died as infants though her sister Mathilda May lived until she was 94! In 1908 Ada married Richard Sneath in 1908 when he was 24. She was 8 years older than her husband.
Richard was a self employed carpenter/gardener. When he married Ada they were living in Banbury Rd Oxford. He enlisted in the 1914/18 war in Watford. He was missing in action in Flanders in 1917.Sadly his wife was pregnant with their daughter Rita who was born 23 February 1918.
Ada had to manage financially until the end of the war when she received an army pension. Ada died 16 years after her husband and is also buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery,

Richard Earl Sneath was born in Stevington Bedfordshire in 1884 to Martha Gaunt age 44 and John Sneath also 44, He lived in the school house as his father was a headmaster, his mother also helped in the school as a carer and teacher. His father came from Fen Stanton Huntingdonshire and his mother was from St Ives Huntingdonshire he had 8 siblings. He married Ada Jane Horne, who came from Berkhamsted, in 1908 when he was 24, she was 8 years older than her husband.

He went missing in action in Flanders in 1917.[1] Sadly his wife was pregnant with their daughter Rita who was born 23 February 1918. In January 1917 his mother Martha had died whilst he was away, he was the youngest of his brothers and sisters, perhaps she died from heartache after he had gone to war.
[1]He was presumed dead on or before 10th October 1917 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres .
