JANE POCOCK (NEE DARVILL/PEARMAN))
1869-1956
Jane Pocock was born Jane Pearman on 16th September 1869 in Stansfield, Suffolk. She was the youngest of two children born to Henry and Isabella/Arabella Pearman (nee Turner, married 1857 Codford, Suffolk). Isabella was from Cannington in Somerset. In 1861 she and Henry were living at 14 Hampden Street, Paddington. Henry worked as a gardener. They had a son William, born in 1860, and baptised on 3rd June that year at Holy Trinity church in Paddington.
By 1871 Henry was widowed at the age of 40, and living back with his parents in Lavenham, Suffolk. He had work as a bricklayer’s labourer. There is no trace of either of his children in the census for that year.
In 1881, at the age of 14, Jane can be found in service to the family of John Freeland and family. Mr Freeland was a retired Inspector in the Metropolitan Police. They lived at 1 King Edward Street Southwark.
Ten years on, and Jane is still in service, this time at 1 Clyde Street in Kensington, to a school master, George McCann and his family.
On the 18th of April 1894 Jane married James Darvill at St Martin’s church in Kentish Town. They lived at 20 Hanover Street in the parish, and James was employed as a firefighter. On 12th April 1896 they baptised their first child, Edward James, at St Matthews church in St Pancras. James’s occupation was now soldier.
Four years later, and now living at 28 Queen Street, they had a daughter, Grace Amelia, born on 28th August, and baptised at the same church on 11th November. James had changed job again, and was now an engine driver.
Sadly James died, and was buried on 27th December 1900.
On the 11th of April 1903 Jane married again, at St Peters, Berkhamsted to John Herbert Pocock. She and daughter Grace, now 11, moved in with John at 18 Holliday Street. John worked as a gardener. They had two more children, Laura Beatrice in 1907 and Violet Ann in 1910. By 1939 the family had moved down the street to number 11.
John died in 1950, and Jane survived him until 5th November 1956. They are buried together.
