FREDERICK JOHN YOUNG; 1870 -1931
Frederick John was born in Berkhamsted on 21st May 1870. His father, also Frederick, was a carpenter and joiner and had been born in 1842 in Newton Longville, Bucks. His mother, Emma Jane, née Kennings was born in 1847 and was from Winslow, Bucks. She and Frederick married in Winslow in January 1866. They must have moved to Berkhamsted shortly afterwards as all of their children were born in Berkhamsted. They had five children in all, including Frederick John: Annie Laura, born 1869; Frederick John, 1870; Florence 1872; Emmeline Edith, 1878 and Frances Miriam, 1887.
In 1871 the family was living on Berkhamsted’s High Street. Frederick senior was working as a carpenter and joiner. It is not evident whether he was employed in one of the town’s timber yards, working for a builder, or was working on his own account, but by 1881 he was working as a carpenter and also employed four men. Although he may have started as a carpenter, Frederick senior expanded his business to become a builder, establishing the firm of Young & Son.
The latter half of the 19th century saw considerable expansion of Berkhamsted and plenty of building work was available in the town. In 1801 the population had been 1,690 but by 1851 it had risen to 3,395, the largest increase occurring following the introduction of the railway to the town. Large scale building started in 1852 with the sale of the Pilkington Manor estate east of Castle Street and following the sale of agricultural land at Kitsbury in 1868 housing development started in the west of the town. “By the end of the century the lower slopes of a once-pastoral hillside had been criss-crossed by new roads. In this residential district, many large villas were built for newcomers who were attracted by the town’s schools and a fast train service to London.”
Frederick John followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a carpenter and working for the family business. He married in the second quarter (i.e. April. May or June) of 1890. His bride was Ellen Mary Wheeler. She was originally from Wingfield, Berkshire and was the daughter of a labourer. The marriage was celebrated at St Peter’s Church in Berkhamsted. Ellen gave birth to her first child, Frederick L. Y. Young, who was born on 14th August 1890 which leads to the inevitable conclusion that she was already a number of months pregnant when the marriage took place. Sadly, Frederick L. Y. died at the age of 12 in 1902. Following Frederick L.Y.’s birth, Ellen gave birth to four more children, George Kennings Young, 1892 – 1967; Florence Evelyn M Young, 1893 -1970; Harold Vincent Young 1899; Victor Henry Young, 1904 -1991.
Following their marriage, Frederick John and Ellen, set up home in Cross Oak Road, but by 1901 had moved to 16 Kitsbury Road where both Frederick and Ellen were to live for the rest of their lives.
Frederick John died at the age of 60 on 6th April 1931. He was buried together with his son Frederick L.Y. who had died in 1902. His estate was worth £2,772 6s 3d.
