Conscripted or volunteered, Henry did serve in the WW1. There is a 1916 record of a Henry Bignall, age 40, of Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, serving with the 266th Railway Company of the Royal Enginners (Royal Engineers, regiment #WR/289983, publication WO 363, The National Archives). The 266 Railway Company Royal Engineers (1917 July – 1918 Feb) was raised at Longmoor, Hampshire, and embarked for Egypt on September 14, 1917.
