Evelyn Hoverd – Birmingham
I lived in the house joined to the jewellers from 1953 when I was born until 1960 when I left Berkhamsted. The house was occupied by Frederick John Bailey, who was John Henry’s son. Unfortunately, Frederick died on 27/9/53 when I was six months old so I didn’t know him, but I was told he was a very kind and generous man. I say this because it was thanks to him that I had such a good start in life. He and his wife, Nannie Bailey (Olive Evelyn), took my mum and me in to live with them as my mum was unmarried and newly arrived across the water from N.Ireland. I was brought up by his wife while my mum had to work to support us. I have such happy memories of my life in Berko. This brings me on to the Sparkes family as they took over Baileys Jewellers, who also played a part in my life. There was a connecting door from the house upstairs that led directly to the workshop above the jewellers. John Edward Sparkes is buried with his mother-in-law Catherine Rolfe, in plot 1109.
