Walks and Talks at Rectory Lane Cemetery – May looks like a busy month!

The National Federation of Cemetery Friends has designated May 12th – 19th as National Cemeteries ‘week’, so the Friends of St Peter’s will be welcoming new volunteers onto our ‘Adopt a Grave’ programme. Current volunteers find it a very rewarding task, and some get caught up in researching the life of the person whose grave they are rescuing from neglect. Anyone interested should contact Campbellkate01@gmail.com or come to the Market stall outside Tesco in Berkhamsted on the morning of Saturday 12th May.

For the first time Cemetery will be part of the Chiltern Walking Festival. ‘Cemetery Circular‘ is offered on Saturdays May 19th and 26th at 10am and a walk aimed at children to coincide with half term at 2pm on Wednesday 30th. Intriguingly, walkers will get an insight into the Cemetery from a certain Jane Ghost, the wife of our Victorian grave digger Richard Ghost, who will lead the walk along with Kate Campbell, our Community Engagement Officer.
All walks begin outside St Peter’s Church on the High Street and refreshments will be available at the end of the walk at The Court House next to St Peter’s Church.

The walks are free but because numbers are limited, anyone wishing to join needs to book via www.visitchilterns.co.uk/walkingfest

Saturday 19th is walk 61, Saturday 26th is walk 62 and Wednesday 30th is walk 63.

On a similar theme, the excellent Dacorum Health Walks initiative will also be visiting the Cemetery on May 15th as part of their summer programme of evening walks. While in the Cemetery they will hear about the Cemetery Project – its history and the plans – from Kate Campbell. This walk starts out from outside the front of Tesco on Berkhamsted High Street at 7pm and there is no charge; all are welcome.
