James Winfield
1853 –1940

Unmarked grave James Winfield (1853-1940)

James was born 6 May 1853 in Berkhamsted to Emma Winfield.

He became a labourer and married Jane Wesley in 1875 in Berkhamsted. They were to have fifteen children.

In 1881 the family lived at Canal Side, Berkhamsted In 1891 James was a farm labourer.

Joseph was born in 1893, Frederick in 1897 and Elsie in 1899.

In 1901 the family was at 2, Canal Side and James was a “horse keeper”.

By 1911 they had moved to 26, Victoria Road. James was a brewer’s labourer.

In June 1921 James, aged 68, was still a labourer, now working for the Berkhamsted Urban District Council. Daughter Elsie was at home, employed by John Dickinson’s at Apsley Mills.

Jane died in June 1928.

In the 1939 Register James is shown as living with his daughter Sarah Ann and her husband William Moorcroft, a horseman on a farm, at 12, New Ground Road, Aldbury. He is described as “Horseman on farm, retired”.

James died at 12, New Ground Road, Aldbury in November 1940, aged 87. He is buried with Jane.
