Berkhamsted in World War 1
During World War I (1914–18) about 200 men and boys from Berkhamsted went to fight and lost their lives in the war. Most of them are buried in the famous battlefield Cemeteries of Belgium and France, but some of them are buried here in Berkhamsted, in Rectory Lane Cemetery. Each one who died has a different story, and every grave reminds us of a tragic period in our history.
You can discover how Berkhamsted played an important part in World War I. Choose a story from the list below to get started, then download learning resources to begin investigating for your local history project.
