Rectory Lane Cemetery, Berkhamsted

Restoring the site

Much of the work that was carried out at the Cemetery, like all good conservation, is virtually undetectable. The Project worked with four main companies during 2018 to reverse the lack of investment over many years. Morcon Foundations Ltd skilfully jacked the memorial arch and gatepiers back into an upright position; Structural Bearing Solutions Ltd rebuilt and anchored the walls; Messenger, BCR Group worked on the conservation of key memorials, the arch and gatepiers, whilst Jarmans refurbished the ironwork fencing and gates.

In 2019, comprehensive treeworks were undertaken by Roderick Tree Wilson Tree Surgery, and William Jackson Garden Design and Build commenced the landscaping works.

Volunteers have constructed the Retreat volunteer facility, and have been involved in planning, preparing for and helping with all the construction works on site since the project began.

During 2020, the landscaping works were completed, with wide accessible paths, sculptural seating, performance and refreshment areas, the renovation of the sexton’s hut and the creation of a Garden of Remembrance.
