Jeremiah was born about 1841 in Leicester, the son of Enoch Skidmore, a canal boatman.
In 1861 he was recorded living on one of two narrow boats –“Jane” and “Rebecca” – lying at Moors Bridge, Ilkeston, near Basford, Derbyshire. His age was given as 18, his place of birth as Leicester and he was described as “Boarder” and “2nd Mate” to Enoch Skidmore, the Master. Benjamin Skidmore, probably his brother, aged 22 was “Boarder” and “1st Mate”.
Jeremiah married Susannah Pickerill, the daughter of a canal boat man, on 5 June 1876 in Hillmorton, Warwickshire.
Their son William was born in 1876 in Hillmorton but Susannah died in the same year, probably as a result of the birth.
In 1891 Jeremiah was master of a canal boat moored at the “Bath Loading Stage” on the Ashby Canal at Ashby-de-la-Zouch alongside a barge whose master was his 75 year old widowed mother-in-law, Martha Pickerell. Son William was working with him as horse driver. It was noted on the census return that the two boats were travelling together as one unit.
In 1901 he was master of the canal boat “Monarch” assisted by William. On census night they were moored in the parish of St Mary, Leicester.
Jeremiah died in November 1905 in Berkhamsted on his canal boat, aged 64.
