Eliza was born in 1836 in Chigwell, Essex, to John and Jane Prior and was baptised 24 April that year.
She never married and entered domestic service.
In 1851, aged just 15, she was an under-nurse in the household of candle manufacturer William Palmer and his wife in Brighton. They had three small children, one of them new-born at the time of the census, and employed, a nurse, a cook and two house servants as well as Eliza.
Ten years later she was employed as a nursemaid in the household of Revd. George Hamilton and his wife at The Vicarage, Theydon Bois, Essex. She would have been looking after their two children aged two and one. A cook and a housemaid were also employed.
At the time of the 1871 census Eliza was the cook at a boarding house, Castle House, Castledown Terrace, Hastings. Two housemaids were also employed and there were five boarders.
It has not been possible to locate Eliza in the 1881 census, but by April 1891 she was a boarder in the home of blacksmith William Pocock and his wife Martha. They had two other boarders, both working men. No occupation or source of income is given for Eliza.
In 1911 she was a boarder in the home of jobbing gardener James Thorne and his wife Mildred at 17, Bridge Street.
Eliza died in February 1919 at 177, High Street aged 82.
