Olive Maud Dudley Bates (née Dwight)
Olive Maud Dudley Dwight was born 1st January 1905, the daughter of Jesse and Nellie (née Dudley) Dwight. She had two younger brothers, Frederick and John.
At the time of the 1911 census the family were living at 141 (now 167), High Street, Berkhamsted, the premises of Dwight Brothers, Cycle and Motor Agents, one of the first motor businesses to be established in Berkhamsted.
An advertisement in a 1904 directory read:
“Hullo! are you 19 Berkhamsted?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Have you a car that I can hire while you overhaul mine?”
“Yes, sir.”
“What are your terms?”
“Our terms are very moderate, by the hour or mile. By the way, sir, would you
prefer the driver in livery?”
“Yes, I should - and what is your postal address?”
“Dwight Brothers, Cycle and Motor Agents, 141, High Street, Berkhamsted”.
Olive was the second wife of Albert William Stanley Bates, whose first wife, Betty, had died in 1926. Albert was a chauffeur working for her father. They married 29th March 1932 in Berkhamsted. In 1939 they were living at 141 (now 167), High Street, Berkhamsted. Her father, Jesse, was still manager of the company but had moved to Ashlyns Road. Albert, no longer a chauffeur, was a clerk at the garage, and Olive a secretary there.
Olive died in late 1947, aged forty three.
It is possible that the Nellie Dwight buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery is her mother who died in April 1931.
