Edward was born in 1846 and baptised in St Peter’s that year. He was the sixth of James Charles and Hannah (née Chilton) Foster’s seven children. His father owned the Swan Inn and was also ran a successful malting and brewing business but died aged only 40 in 1843.
Hannah continued to run the business and in 1852 married John Edward Lane, a vigorous businessman from the Lane’s Nurseries family. She died in 1861 and is buried in plot 181.
In 1861 Edward was living with his step-father and siblings at The Swan and, aged 15, was a railway clerk.
He married Marian Bye, born in Cheltenham, in St Pancras, London in 1867 and their daughter Maude Marian (1868) was born in Berkhamsted.
Edward died 18 April 1870 aged 24 and did not live to see his second child, Grace Ethel, who was born later that year.
Fortunately Marian and the children were left with an income from investments. Marian continued to live in Berkhamsted.
