Plot 773 George Bedford (1855-1920)

George was born in Hogs Lane, Ashley Green, Chesham in 1855 to farmer Barnet Bedford and his wife Maria (née Pratt). He was their third son.

In 1871 George was still with his father and step-mother at Hogs Lane. His father was farming 95 acres.

George never married.

In 1881 he was farming King’s Hill Farm, Berkhamsted – 181 acres – and employing three men and a boy. His unmarried sister Elizabeth was living with him, probably as his housekeeper.

George and Elizabeth were still living there in 1901.

In October 1906 Elizabeth became the second wife of Jabez Cook, a childless widower and

a miller.

All three moved to 32, Kittsbury Road. By 1911 George, was a farm foreman. Jabez was still working as a miller.

Jabez died 13th January 1912. He appointed George as executor of his will. He was buried in Plot 969 with his first wife Isabella.

George and Elizabeth remained at 32, Kittsbury Road. She died in June 1920, aged 59. She was buried here 12 June and George died the next day in West Herts hospital.
