Sarah Sprigge
Unmarked grave Sarah Elizabeth Sprigge (née Austen) (1835-1916)
Sarah was born in 1835 in Hammersmith to William Frederick (“gentleman”) and Mary Austen.
She married Henry Sprigge, a chemist and dentist born in St Neots, on 30 September 1864 at St Luke’s, Chelsea.
In April 1864 Henry was advertising in The St Neots Chronicle that he had extended his photographic department and was producing cartes de visite and supplying advice and chemicals to amateur photographers.
Frank S was born in 1866 followed by Charles G (1877), Arthur A (1868) and Albert H (1870).
In 1871 the family was living in the Market Square, St Neots and employed a general servant and a nursemaid. Henry’s apprentice was also living with them.
Henry died, aged only 36, in late 1873 and Sarah was left with four young sons, although with funds of just under £100,000 at 2025 values.
Charles, aged 14, was apprenticed to a grocer. He eventually moved to Yorkshire, married and died in 1951.
Frank and Arthur emigrated to Australia where Arthur died in 1890, aged only 22, and Frank in 1892 aged 26. The news must have been devastating for Sarah.
In April 1891 Sarah was recorded visiting a family in St Neots.
In 1901 she living with son Albert at 125 (now 151), High Street, a substantial house of 10 rooms, where she was to remain for the rest of her life. She was “living on own means” and he was an outfitter. They employed a live-in domestic servant.
Sarah died 14 January 1916 125, High Street aged 81.
Albert died in 1931 and is buried in this cemetery.
