- Ethel Majorie (Madge) born 4 November 1899. Madge ran a horse riding school and kept her horses on ‘Tompkins Meadow’ behind Berkhamsted Girls School.

Thomas Tompkins died 1930
Thomas Tompkins was a High Street butcher in Berkhamsted, like his father, Thomas and Grandfather, Francis, before him. Born in Berkhamsted in July 1869 and christened on 11 July 1869, he carried on the business at 140 High Street (now Rebecca Clarke Interiors) after his father’s death in 1887.
Thomas was one of six children born to Thomas and Emily Tompkins (was Green) [plot 6]:

In 1871, he was aged 1 year and living with his family on the High Street and by 1881 his father had employed a butcher to work alongside him called Job Sills. By 1891, he was working with his mother and brother Edward also butchers, as his father had died in 1887. The family had a domestic servant, sometimes two during these years.
On 14 November 1898, Thomas married Edith Horton who was born in Watford on 28 August 1877.
In 1901, Thomas was running the butchers shop on 140 High Street with his wife Edith and the first of their three children Ethel Majorie, known as Marjorie/Madge:

Thomas Tompkins died in Berkhamsted on 27 March 1930 at the age of 60.
His youngest son Tommy Tompkins** carried on the family business in Berkhamsted running his butchers shop from 15 Gravel Path (now Eastwoods butchers) until he retired to Norfolk.
He married his wife Lois (Flossie) Preston in July 1937. She was a clerk at the Waterworks. He died on 12 March 1995.
**Tommy Tompkins was famous for being in charge of the Coronation Ox roast in the playing fields by the canal.
