Alice was born in 1874 in Berkhamsted, the daughter of Frederick and Mary Cheshire. Frederick (died 1901) was a tailor and is buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave. Alice’s mother died in 1875. Her father married again in 1879.
Alice never married and began a career in domestic service. In 1901 she was cook in the household of retired Lieutenant Colonel Embale Thelwall in Shrublands Road and in 1911 resident domestic servant in the household of Howard Vinen, a retired merchant, at 5, Cowper Road.
The 1939 Register records her living in the household of Frank and Evelyn Cheshire at 79, Cross Oak Road. Frank was her nephew, the son of her brother Alfred and his wife Bertha who are buried in plot 1141.
Her occupation was given as “domestic service, general”. Also in the household was Helen Stilton, a retired cook aged 73.
Alice died at 52, High Street 4 February 1958 and was buried 8 Feb 1958 here in the same grave as Ellen Stilton who had died 1947.
