Biography:
Alice Gibbs
1859 –1917

Unmarked grave Alice Gibbs (née Clarke) (1859-1917)

Alice was born in Wellingborough, Northants in 1859 to John Clarke, a baker and his wife Mary Ann.

By 1871 Mary Ann had given birth to three sons and another daughter. Aged 13, Alice was a pupil teacher. This would have meant that in the local school she was trusted to look after a group of younger children and to help them with their three Rs.

After her mother died Alice became housekeeper for her father in Potterspury, Northants, where in 1881 she married William Gibbs, a coachman from Beachampton in Buckinghamshire.

Sidney William (1882), Millicent (1884) and Leonard Joseph (1886) were all born in Potterspury and

Gertrude Alice (1890) was born in Euston, Suffolk.

By 1891 the family were living in Old Fleece Yard off Market Hill in Buckingham. William was still a coachman and it seems he was moving around for his employment.

Ethel Fanny was born in 1893 in Latimer, Bucks and the family then moved to Berkhamsted where Florence, was born in 1898.

William died in Berkhamsted in March 1900 when they were living in Charles Street. He was 41 and did not live to see his daughter Elsie Winifred who was born later that year. (It is likely that he is buried one of the two unmarked graves in this cemetery in the name of William Gibbs).

Alice and the family moved to 3, Kitsbury Road where she began to take in laundry and also had two female boarders to help the family finances. At home she still had five children aged four months to 17 to support and life must have been hard.

Things must have been a little easier ten years later, by which time she had moved to 50, Shrublands Avenue. Although she was still having to take in laundry, Gertrude was assisting with that and son Leonard, a house painter, was living with them. Florence and Winifred were at school. (The 1911 census shows that of her ten children, four had died by that date).

Alice died in February 1917 at 50, Shrublands Avenue, aged 58.
