Unmarked grave Annie Elizabeth Johnson Percival (née Bates) (1881-1940)

Anne Elizabeth Johnson Bates was born in 1881 in Totternhoe, Beds, to Zilphah and Alfred Bates. Her father was the sub-postmaster for the village and her mother a straw plaiter.

In 1901 Annie was living with her family at The Drive, Totternhoe and was the post office assistant, working with her father.

She married Arthur G Percival, a general labourer, 13 April 1902 in the Congregational church, Berkhamsted.

Grace Victoria (1902), Doris Lilian (1907), Arthur E (1909) and George (1911) were all born in Berkhamsted.

In 1911 the family lived at 3,Station Road. Arthur was still a general labourer.

Frederick was born in 1915 followed by Annie (1917) and Olive (1920).

The 1921 census records them still at 3,Station Road and that Arthur was by then a coal yard foreman.

Sadly Annie’s mental health deteriorated and she had been admitted to Napsbury Hospital by the time the 1939 Register was taken. She died there in March 1940 aged 58.
