Arthur was born 6 November 1888 in Orchard End, Northchurch, to James and Clara Lay. His father was a bricklayer’s labourer.
By 1901, aged 13, he was already working as a “farmer’s boy”.
Ten years later he, his two younger brothers and three younger sisters were all living with their parents at 25, Gossoms End. Arthur and his brother Alfred were labourers at Cooper’s chemical works producing sheep dip.
Arthur married Elizabeth Cook in 1916 in Berkhamsted.
In 1921 they were living at 48, Highfield Road and he was still employed by Cooper’s.
The 1939 register describes him as “Chemical works labourer”.
Arthur died 11 February 1951 aged 63. Elizabeth survived him until 1964.
His mother, who died in 1932, is buried in plot 950
in the cemetery
