Arthur was born 31 August 1872 in Berkhamsted to Emma and Benjamin Pratt. His father was a labourer who died in 1878, leaving Emma with nine children.
In 1881 Arthur was living with his mother in the High Street. Two older sisters and an older and younger brother were also at home. His mother and sisters were straw plaiters and his older brother was an unemployed labourer. Life must have been very hard.
In 1891 he was living in the High Street with his mother, siblings Clara, Frederick and Harry and nephew Willie. He and his brothers were general labourers, his mother was a laundress and Clara was a parlour maid.
The 1901 census records him as a wood planning machinist living with his mother and nephew Willie at 74, Gossoms End.
Arthur married Sarah Ann in Skidmore in 1902 in St Mary’s, Northchurch and Elizabeth Fanny was born in 1908.
In 1911 Arthur was a woodworking machinist and the family lived at 16, Castle Street where Arthur lived for the rest of his life.
Nellie Irene Grace was born in 1912 but sadly died the next year. She is buried in this cemetery.
In 1921 Arthur was employed by H & J Matthews, builders. By 1939 he had retired.
He died in 1944.
His father Benjamin is also buried in this cemetery.
