Plot 1141 Bertha Cheshire (née Horne) (1867-1941)
Bertha was born 19 January 1867 in Berkhamsted, the daughter of John William and Eliza Horne (who lie in Plot 670). Her father was a carpenter and joiner and they lived in Mill Street.
She married Alfred Cheshire, an iron worker, in Berkhamsted in 1888 and their son Arthur was born the next year.
In 1891 Alfred was working as a coach smith and the family was living in the High Street with his older brother Herbert, a carter. Son Percy Gilbert was born in 1898.
In 1901 Bertha and Alfred were at 25, Victoria Road with Elsie (born that year), Arthur and Percy. Frank Alfred, born 1908, completed the family.
In 1911 they were at 8, Cross Oak Road. Alfred was a blacksmith “working on government contracts”. Arthur was a clerk at the gasworks
Their son Percy Gilbert was reported missing in action 1917. He is commemorated on the gravestone of his grandparents John and Eliza Horne (Plot 670).
In 1921 they were still at 8, Cross Oak Road. Alfred was employed by East & Son as a smith (iron worker) and, of the children, only Frank was at home.
By the time of the 1939 Register Alfred had retired and he and Bertha lived alone at Cross Oak Road. Frank, who had married, was living at 79, Cross Oak Road.
Bertha died in 1941 aged 74 and is buried here with Alfred who died in 1949.
