Biography:
Charles Tarsey

Charles Tarsey
Unmarked grave Charles Tarsey (1835-1903)
Charles was born in 1835 in Water End, Great Gaddesden, the son of agricultural labourer Thomas Tarsey and his wife Sarah.
By 1851 Charles was employed by farmer Henry Geary who was farming 90 acres on Northchurch Common.
On 19 June 1864 he married local straw plaiter Charlotte Humphrey in St Peter’s church.
The 1871 census shows them living at Canal Side, Berkhamsted with Charlotte’s unemployed labourer brother and a four year old nephew Joseph Potten.
In 1891 the couple lived in Water Lane. Charles was a general labourer, as was his brother-in-law Frank Humphrey. Also with them were two Potten nephews aged 14 and 18, both labourers.
Charlotte died in 1892 and Charles died in November 1903 in the Union workhouse infirmary aged 68.
Given the rarity of the name it seems highly likely that infant William George Tarsey, born and died in 1868 and buried in this cemetery, was their son.
William Tarsey, Charles’s older brother, is also buried in this cemetery.
