Plot 1144 Clara Ann Thorn (née Baynton) (1875-1948)

Clara was born 15 September 1875 in Hackney to Walter and Mary Ann Baynton.

In 1881 the family were living in Blackstock Road, Highbury and her father was a tram car conductor. Clara had an older and younger sister and a younger brother.

By the time of the 1891 census three more brothers had been born and the family of eight were occupying three rooms in a house in Norwich Road, Shoreditch. Her father was a carman – a delivery driver – and Clara and her older sister were employed as tie makers.

12 March 1893 Walter died and the family moved to 97, Old Ford Road. On 18 April 1894 Mary Ann was forced to apply to the Bethnal Green  Poor Law Commissioners for support. The records show that all her children were living with her, their ages ranging from four to twenty one. Unfortunately the records do not show whether any help was given.

Clara married John Thorn in 1898 in Edmonton and by the time their son Frank W was born in 1900 they had moved to Berkhamsted.

In 1901 they lived at 11, Cowper Road. John was a mantle presser in the King’s Road factory. They had a female lodger, a widowed mantle maker.

Clara was born in 1902 and Albert in 1904.

By 1911 the family had moved to 11, Shrublands Avenue where they were still living in

1921. Frank was a railway porter, daughter Clara a machinist at the clothing factory and Albert was an assistant salesman for shoe maker Freeman, Hardy & Willis. They had also adopted three year old Margaret Barnes, born in Hornsey.

The 1939 Register records them still at Shrublands Avenue. John was a porter at the factory. Daughter Clara, a machinist at the factory was living at home, as was adopted daughter Margaret.

Clara died 27 April 1948.
