Edward was born 7 September 1888 in St Lawrence, Jersey, Channel Islands, to Edward and Eliza (née Bird)Woolley, His father, a gardener, had been born in Northchurch.
In 1891 the family lived in Rue de Haut in St Lawrence. Edward had four older sisters.
In 1901 Edward was at home with his parents, two sisters and a brother.
By 1911 Edward and Eliza had returned to Berkhamsted and were living at 14, Park Street with Edward, a baker’s assistant, two of his older sisters and his younger brother.
Edward married Edith Annie Winfield 11 November 1911 in Berkhamsted and they had two daughters: Kathleen Mary (1913) and Lillian Margaret (1915).
On 9 December 1916 Edward enlisted in the Army. At the time he was a saw mill hand. His service records are extremely difficult to decipher, but he appears to have initially been with the Middlesex regiment and eventually ended up in the 12th Bedfordshire regiment as a Private. Throughout he seems to have been in the Labour Corps.
Edith died 8 November 1918 and is buried here. Edward was still a serving soldier at the time.
He was demobilised 15 February 1919 when his character was described as “Very good”. He returned home to 20, Victoria Road, Berkhamsted.
Edward married again to Doris Mayling 24 April 1921 and initially they lived at 20, Victoria Road. Edward was a general labourer for H & J Matthews, builders.
By 1939 he and Doris had moved to 28, Victoria Road by which time he was a Council manual worker.
Edward died 31 March 1956 at 28, Victoria Road.
