Eliza Butters

Unmarked grave Eliza Butters (1857-1862)
Eliza was the daughter of one of Berkhamsted’s many bootmakers. Her father, James, had been born in Bromley, Kent, but had moved to Berkhamsted, via Marylbone, with his wife Susan by the time Eliza was born in 1857. She was baptised in St Peter’s on 4 August the next year.
The 1861 census shows three year old Eliza living in a bustling household in the High Street. Her father employed three apprentices, all of whom lived-in, and she had four older brothers aged six to twelve. Her mother worked as a bonnet maker, probably making up headwear from local straw plait.
Sadly little Eliza died a year after the census, aged only four.
