Eliza CHRISTIAN died 26th October 1868 aged 74

Eliza CHRISTIAN was baptised on 7th July 1794 at Arbory on the Isle of Man

Her father John CHRISTIAN came from a well-established religious family residing in the southernmost parish of The Isle of Man. He, his brother and his father were all vicars of the local churches.

Eliza’s mother Elizabeth MARTIN was from the adjoining parish. She died when Eliza was 14, having had nine children.

Nothing much is known of Eliza through her younger life, but she never married. Her first appearance in public records is in the 1851 census when she was a householder in the High Street, aged 55, and described as an “annuitant” so clearly with a private income. Living with her was a 26-year-old house maid Lacy Rogers from Gaddesden.

Eliza was clearly a close friend of Robert Smith Dorrien. In the 1861 census (as Elizabeth) she was a visitor in his huge household at Haresfoot. She was there with his wife, 12 children, a couple of other visitors and 15 servants. This time she was described as a “fund holder”.

Whether Eliza was on holiday or whether she had moved house, Eliza died aged 74 in Folkestone but returned to Berkhamsted to be buried on 31st October 1868 by James HUTCHINSON the Rector.

The following month Eliza’s will was  proved by the oath of Robert Algernon Smith Dorrien of Haresfoot, her sole executor. Her effects were valued at under £1,500.
