Plot 872 Elizabeth Briant (née Monk) (1852-1939)
Elizabeth Monk was born in Aldbury, 1852 to poultry breeder John Monk and his wife Elizabeth.
In 1861 she was living with her family in Northfield, Aldbury. She, her mother, her two sisters and her two youngest brothers were straw plaiters. The eldest boy was a carter.
She married Ezra Briant, a farm labourer, in Aldbury in 1869.
William (1872), Herbert (1874), Ellen (1875), Elizabeth (1877), Anna (1878) and Ezra jnr. (1881).
In 1881 they were living in Northfield, Aldbury. Ezra was a farm labourer, specifically, as a feeder for a threshing machine.
Ezra junior died in 1883 and Arthur was born in 1884. By 1886 they had moved to Bulbourne, Tring where Frank was born that year.
In 1891 the family was still in Bulbourne, Tring. Ezra was an agricultural labourer; George and William were canal boatmen; Herbert was a general labourer; Ellen, Lizzie and Annie were working in the Tring silk mills and the two youngest were at school.
Amelia was born in 1892.
The 1901 census records the family at 1, Bulbourne Road, Tring. Elizabeth, Annie and Amelia were at home, Ezra was a farm labourer, Arthur was a shepherd and Frank a “shepherd boy”.
Ezra died 11 November 1910.
By April 1911 Elizabeth was a self-employed certified midwife, living in Bulbourne Road, Tring with Amelia and two young schoolboys from London as lodgers.
In 1921 she was living alone at 195, High Street, Berkhamsted.
She died 8 May 1939, aged 86, at 60, Vicarage Road, Watford, although her home address was Meadow Road, Berkhamsted.
