Elizabeth Cook (773)

Plot 773 Elizabeth Cook (née Bedford) (1861-1920)
Elizabeth was born in 1861 in Chesham, the daughter of farmer Barnett Bedford and his wife Maria (née Pratt). She had four older brothers. Barnett had been born in Northchurch and his two oldest sons were also born there.
Her mother died in 1865 and her father remarried the next year. This marriage was to give Elizabeth two half-brothers.
In 1881 Elizabeth was a domestic servant in the home of William Herbert Wodehouse and his wife Charlotte. Mr Wodehouse was a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire and he, his wife and son lived at the magnificent Woolmers House in Letty Green. (Bought in the 1920s by the grandparents of Queen Elizabeth II).
Elizabeth was one of the five female servants. There was also a butler, a page and two footmen.
By April 1891 Elizabeth had moved to Berkhamsted to keep house for her brother George who was farming King’s Hill Farm. She and George were still living there in 1901.
