Emily was born in Northampton on 3 October 1880, the fifth child of bootmaker William Fisher and his wife Ann (née Briggs). They lived at 4, Court 3, Bath Street, St Sepulchre, Northampton.
She married hairdresser Thomas Barlow Payne in the Watford district in 1901 and it is likely that she was in the area because she was in domestic service.
They had two daughters, both born in Watford: Alice Maud (1902) and Gladys Gertrude (1908) and in 1911 the family lived at 15, Fearnley Street, Watford.
By June 1921 they had moved to 93, Gossoms End. Alice was a tailoress at the mantle factory in Lower King’s Road and Gladys was at school.
Thomas died 11 July 1925 at St Bartholomew’s hospital, London, aged only 43, and is buried in this cemetery.
In 1939 Emily and Gladys were living with Alice and her husband Jack Higby, an electrician, at 48, Belmont Road, Hemel Hempstead.
Emily died in 1948 in Berkhamsted.
