Unmarked grave Fanny Louisa Cook Skelton (Née Burton, late Searle) (1864-1944)
Fanny was born 31 July 1864 in Poplar, East London to Alfred Robert and Amelia C (née van Kempen) Burton. Her father was a traveller in ale and porter and she was the fourth of their six children. In 1871 the family lived in Bromley.
Her father died in 1879 and in 1881, aged sixteen, she was a dentist’s assistant.
In late 1885 Fanny married Thomas Searle “a picture frame fitter up” according to the 1891 census which recorded them living in Bethnal Green with Thomas (1887) and Florence A (1890).
Ernest Edward was born in 1895 and Caroline Elizabeth in 1897. They were still living in Bethnal Green in 1901.
Thomas died in early 1903 and in April 1911 Fanny and her four children were living at 19, Gascoyne Place, Bethnal Green. Fanny was working as a charwoman – hard, physical work. Thomas was an ironmonger’s shop assistant, Florence was a corset busk fitter, Ernest a jeweller’s errand boy and Elizabeth was still at school.
Later that year Fanny married John Skelton, a labourer, in the Clerkenwell district.
By 1939 they were living at 11, Middle Road, Berkhamsted.
Both Fanny and John died in 1944 and they are buried here together.
