Florence Swain
Unmarked plot Florence Swain (1902-1921)
Florence was born in Berkhamsted in 1902 to Robert John and Alice (née Lewis) Swain. Her parents were both from London and their oldest three children were all born there. However, by 1900, when Lily was born, they had moved to Berkhamsted and Robert was employed as a mantle presser at Corby Palmer & Stewart’s mantle factory in Lower King’s Road.
The family initially lived at 2, Ravens Lane, where Florence and son Philip was born in 1903. Sadly, baby Philip died in 1904. He is buried in this cemetery.
By 1911 the family had moved to 41, Shrublands Avenue.
Florence died in June 1921, aged 19, at 39, Shrublands Avenue. Very shortly afterwards the 1921 census was taken, showing the bereaved family – Robert, and Florence’s older sister Lily (also employed at the mantle factory) were both out of work, as were so many people recorded in that census. Also at home was Cecil, born 1908.
