Frank was born 22 June 1911 in Hanwell, Middlesex to Ada Jane and Frank Harrowell from a large family of Berkhamsted builders.
For reasons unknown Frank snr. used the surname Lewis and the couple were living as
as Mr and Mrs Lewis in Oaklands Road, Hanwell, Middlesex in 1911 when Frank G was born. Frank snr. was a “traveller to a builders merchant”.
Baby Frank G had a sister Joyce Irene and a brother Arthur Gordon.
Frank snr. also used the surname Lewis when he joined the Army at the start of World War I, but his real name appears to have been no secret and records refer to Frank Harrowell (alias Frank Lewis).
In 1917 Iris Aileen Lewis Harrowell was born.
Frank served as a Lance Corporal in the 55th Machine Gun Corps and was killed in action at Loos, France on 5th May 1918. He is commemorated on the Berkhamsted War Memorial.
Ada appears to have abandoned the Lewis name as a widow living in Berkhamsted and from then on used the surname Harrowell.
In 1921 Frank G, now a painter and decorator, was living with mother, brother and sisters at 17, Clarence Road and in 1939 he, Ada and Alfred were at 27, Charles Street. Joyce had died in 1930.
Frank married Clarice May Smith in Berkhamsted in 1940.
He died at home in Park View Road West on 7 January 1967. Clarice remained at the house where she lived until her death in 1980.
His grandparents William and Lizzie Harrowell are buried in Plot 757. His sister Joyce and mother Ada lie in Plot 842.
