Frederick Rance
1852 –1927

Unmarked grave Frederick Rance (1852-1927)

Frederick was born in 1852 at 9, Pleasant Lane, Tring, the oldest child of labourer John Rance and his wife Hannah.

In 1871 the family lived in King Street, Tring and five of Frederick’s younger siblings were also at home. He was a brick labourer and his father a gardener.

He married widow Clara Horwood (née Bates). Her husband had died after less than two years of marriage and she had two children, Annie and Ernest Alfred Bates, who had been born out of wedlock

In 1901 they lived in 23, Mill Street.

Clara died in January 1908 at 44, Castle Street aged 46. She is buried in this cemetery.

The 1911 census shows Frederick and Ernest, now known as Ernest Rance, still at 44, Castle Street.

By June 1921 Frederick had been admitted to the Union Infirmary where he died in February 1927 aged 75.

He is buried here with another inmate, W Wheeler, who is no relation, as was the Union Workhouse policy.
