Fredrick Arthur Bates (1911-1943)

Frederick was born the 13th February 1911 in Fulham, the youngest son of  William Henry and Minnie Frances (née Thorn) Bates. His father was a high-tension cable joiner’s mate on the Underground.

In 1921 Frederick was living with living with his parents and siblings at 12, Humboldt Road, Fulham, but at some point he visited, or studied in the United States. The passenger list for the SS Majestic (White Star Line) records him disembarking at Southampton on the 4th March 1933. His occupation was given as “student” and his UK address as 22, Lintaine Grove, Kensington which had been his parents’ home since at least 1924. His parents appear to have separated at some point after this.

Frederick never married and the 1939 Register records his occupation as “Artist.” He was then living with his mother, married sister Ella and widowed paternal grandmother at 9, Foundling Hospital Close, Berkhamsted. (This road is probably now Coram Close.)

He died the 10th October 1943 and his mother Minnie, who died in 1951, was buried here with him.
