Frederick was born in 1828 in Dunstable, the son of James and Jane (née Hatchett) Cheshire. His father was a joiner by trade.
The family had moved to Akeman Street in Tring by 1841. Frederick’s oldest brother was working with their father, the next son was a shoemaker’s apprentice and Frederick was apprenticed to a tailor. He also had a younger brother.
By 1851 Frederick had left home and was lodging with the Sharman family in Aylesbury Road, Tring. Both Mr Sharman and Frederick were tailors – possibly Frederick was employed by him.
On 22 November 1851 Frederick married Mary Meager, the daughter of Thorn Meager, from Frithsden, in St Marylebone church, London.
Their daughter Emily (1854) and son Frederick (1855) were born in Rickmansworth. Jane was born in 1857 in Tring and son Frank in Northchurch (1860).
In 1861 they were living in the High Street, Northchurch. Mary was working as a dressmaker and Frederick as a tailor. Walter was born in 1862 and Herbert in 1867. Sadly son Frank died aged only 9 the next year. Alfred was born in 1870. (He died in 1941 and is buried here in plot 1141 with his wife).
At the time of the 1871 census the family were still living in the High Street. Their last child, Alice, was born in 1873. (Alice never married. She died in 1958 and is buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave).
Mary died in late 1875 aged 43.
In late 1879 Frederick married Sarah Ann Verney in Berkhamsted. She had been working as cook to the family of widowed Mrs Bullock, a lady of independent means, in Berkhamsted.
Their daughter Florence was born in November 1880 and baptised on 28th of that month at St Peter’s. Son Arthur was born in 1882 and baptised 9 April and daughter Jessie was baptised 8 April 1883.
By the time of the 1891 census they had moved to Victoria Road where Frederick died in January 1901, aged 73.
