Gerald Atkinson

Plot 366 Commemoration of Gerald Brenan Atkinson (1900-1961)

Gerald was born 17 February 1900 in China, the younger son of (John) Brenan Atkinson and Amelia Sophia (née Gould).

In April 1911 Gerald was a boarder at St John’s Beaumont in Old Windsor. According to the school’s websiteSt John’s Beaumont was opened in 1888 initially as the preparatory school for the Jesuit public school Beaumont College, which was also situated in Old Windsor.” As Gerald’s parents were married in Shanghai Church of England cathedral it is not clear why a Roman Catholic establishment was chosen.

Gerald became a cadet at the Royal Military College during the war. His older brother Captain Rupert Norman Gould served in the Royal Air Force and died March 7 1919. He is buried here.

On 15 December 1919, a month after the end of the war, Gerald joined the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted Lieutenant 15 December 1921.

In April 1925 he arrived in London from Bombay on the M.S. Donala. His address was given as c/o Grindley & Co, London and his occupation as Army officer.

On 22 May 1929 Lieutenant G B Atkinson, of the Malplaquet barracks, Aldershot, sailed from Liverpool on the SS Alpapa bound for Lagos, Nigeria. His reason for travelling was not recorded.

On 23 August 1933 Captain G B Atkinson, civil servant, (address Army and Navy Club, London) sailed on the Alpapa again, destination “West Africa”.

Then, on 7 October 1936, Captain G B Atkinson, “Army officer ret’d” of Heather Cottage, Potten End, embarked at London on the SS Orient for Australia, which was given as his country of intended permanent future residence. He was travelling alone and it would appear that Gerald never married.

He did, indeed settle in Australia, as he died there 29 March 1961 and was buried at the Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium, North Ryde, Ryde City, New South Wales.

His mother is buried here with her son Rupert.
