Plot 914 Hannah Louisa Youngs (1841-1919)

Hannah Louisa Hammond was born in 1841 in St Osyth in Essex to labourer Joseph Hammond and his wife Louisa. She appears to have always been known as Louisa and is referred to here by that name

Married agricultural labourer George Youngs.

Eliza (1862), George (1865), Louisa (1867), Charlotte (1868), James (1870) all St Osyth.

1871 “By Lee Wick, St Osyth”.

Albert (1872 Thorrington). Douglas (1874 St Osyth), Joe (1877)

George died in the 2nd quarter of 1880 aged 39. Ernest was born shortly afterwards (1880) both Little Clacton.

In 1881 Louisa was living in Pig Street, Little Clacton with Charlotte, Albert, James, Douglas, Joe and Ernest. Her marital status is shown as single and “Formerly labourer’s wife” has been crossed out. The children were at school and nobody in the family appeared to be employed.

1891 Brickfields Cottages, Great Clacton (which predates the seaside resort of Clacton-on-Sea). Louisa was a widow and a laundress. Living with her were her daughter Charlotte and her husband labourer George Bull; sons Joe and  James, both labourers, and granddaughter Lillian, born in 1887 to her unmarried daughter Louisa.

In 1901 she was then visiting the home of her daughter Charlotte and George Bull, a bricklayer’s labourer and their children at 4, St Mary’s Road, Clacton. Hannah was then aged 59 years and was working as a monthly nurse, looking after mothers and their new born babies.  With her was her granddaughter Lillian.

In 1911 Louisa was no longer working and was living with Charlotte and George in their home in Clacton.

Louisa died 15 January 1919. Her address at the time of her death was recorded as 20 Cowper Road. The 1921 census reveals that Charlotte and her family were living at that address in 1921. Charlotte’s husband George was then working as a painter employed by D Harrowell & Son, so the family, including Hannah, must have moved to Berkhamsted sometime between 1911 and 1919.
