Rectory Lane Cemetery, Berkhamsted

Biography:
Harry Rose
1866 –1912

Unmarked grave Harry Rose (1866-1912)

Harry was born in 1866 to James and Ellen (née Daniels) Rose. His father was a bricklayer and between at least 1871 and 1881 they lived in Eddy Street, Berkhamsted. Aged 14, Harry was already working as an agricultural labourer.

In 1891 Harry was “living on his own means” as a boarder in Fulham. Had he come to London to seek his fortune? The fact that his landlord was a packer at a “paper stainer’s” – a wallpaper maker’s – works probably secured Harry the job that he was to follow for the rest of his life.

Harry married Berkhamsted girl Emma Elizabeth Pearce in Hackney in early 1892. They were to have no children.

In 1901 they lived in two rooms at 13, Caversham Street, Chelsea. Three other families lived there, occupying two rooms each.

In 1911 he was still employed as a wallpaper stainer and the couple lived at 70, Gossoms End where Harry died in November 1912 aged 46.

Emma survived him until 1941. She and his father are also buried in this cemetery.
