Unmarked grave Harry Hackwell Ruggins (1841-1922)

Harry was born in 1841 in Chesham, the  third child of Thomas and Mary Ruggins. His father was a general labourer and Harry had two older sisters. In 1815 they lived at Bank Yard, High Street, Chesham along with a lodger. Aged 11, Harry was a straw plaiter producing straw plait for the Luton and Dunstable hat industry. This was a common occupation for the women and children in labouring families.

In 1861 he was still in Bank Yard, but living with his sister Elizabeth, her husband James Aris and their four children. Harry was a sawyer.

Harry married Sarah Stone in 1863 in Chesham. Sarah already had a son, Charles, born out of wedlock in 1860. He was to take Harry’s name. Alfred was born in 1864 and Alice in 1871.

In 1871 the family lived in Germain Street, Chesham. Harry was a malt shovel maker.

Walter was born in 1876.

In 1881 they were in Way Lane, Chesham and in 1901 at 79, Germain Street.

The 1911 was 79, Fullers Hill, Chesham. (This may be the same address as in 1901 as the two roads join at about no.79.) Harry was still a wooden shovel maker.

In 1921 he and Sarah were still at 79, Fuller’s Hill and Harry had retired.

Shortly after that they moved to Gossoms End. Sarah died in March 1922 at 23, Gossoms End. Harry survived her only until April that year when he died aged 81. They are buried here together.
